This course is one of the most popular ones we’ve ever run at fxphd, and we’re excited to be presenting an encore presentation of the offering. Tim Clapham, one of our most popular profs at fxphd, will be running the course.

Class 1: Taking a client storyboard through to the design stages and then building the project in After Effects, creating an infinite type zoom with vector artwork, incorporating client changes and then preparing the file for output
Class 2: A look into Particle systems available in After Effects, their features and some examples. Creation of a 5 second animation using some of the particle systems discussed, and a look at creating fake 3D reflections and building a simple camera rig
Class 3: An exploration of some of the features of Trapcode Particular. This is a project based class where we look at using animated custom particles, attaching particles to lights, using expressions and creating motion paths for the particles
Class 4: This lesson looks at techniques for cutting up bitmap images and animating them, including using expressions to make a walk cycle
Class 5: Exploring 3D multipass rendering, and how to use them in After Effects. First a brief explanation of the types of passes that can be output from most 3D applications. Then a look at some real world examples. Finally a look at using 3D passes with Trapcode Form and Particular
Class 6: Part 1 of 2. In this class we will build a 5 second bumper/ promo for a TV show. We’ll track some camera motion to add a handheld feel to the AE camera. Then we’ll take this and animate some moves in 3D, adding in copy and some extra elements
Class 7: Part 2 of 2. In this class we finish building a 5 second bumper/ promo for a TV show
Class 8: Part 1 of 3. We will look at some methods of using 3D renders and exported data in our After Effects comps. Taking multipass renders and enhancing them. Using the camera data from the 3D application to match our AE 3D layers to the 3D render. Also, pasting multiple paths into shape layers, animating shape layers and adding effects
Class 9: Part 2 of 3. In this class we continue building the project we started last week. We look at using mattes combined with continually rasterising layers and shape layers to draw on a logo
Class 10: Part 3 of 3. In this class we finish building the no logo project. We composite a 3D render onto After Effects 3D layers. Add in some extra details and finally prepare the animation for final output, looking at correcting unsafe colours

When objects impact the ground, such as bullets or footsteps, one often expects to see an effect such as a puff of dust (dust hit) or a burst of debris. This four part tutorial demonstrates how to create dust hits and debris from bullets hitting the ground, fired by an animated jet fighter composited into a live action background.

Chapter One: Creating a Dust Hit Generator
In chapter one, we create a dust hit generator that allows us to easily create a library of sequences to map onto particle sprites. The generator incorporates volume emission, omni emission, volume axis fields, turbulence, multiStreak and sprite particles, expressions and hardware rendering.

Chapter Two: Collision Events and Sprite Sequences
In chapter two, we create the necessary collision events to generate our particles at the moment of bullet impact. We then move onto the various steps required to setup our sprites, including custom attributes, expressions to be able to randomly select various dust hit sequences for each impact sprite, and sprite sequence setup in After Effects.

Chapter Three: Live Action, Sprite Tweaks, Scorch Marks
In chapter three, we first look at an alternate approach to managing sprite placement that offers increased flexibility. We then integrate our effect into a photographic backplate and add a new collision event to generate scorch marks on the ground where the bullets hit.

Chapter Four: Impact Debris, Rendering and Compositing
In chapter four, we first address the effect of overSampling on our simulation to improve behavior. We then move onto a new collision event to create dynamic debris at the points of impact. Once the effect is complete, our elements are rendered separately, then composited and adjusted in After Effects.

As with learning any new language, we learn to follow different rules then what we are used to. Thinking Particles is no exception to the rule. It has its own rules and workflow. Decrypting how the system "thinks" is one of the most crucial endeavors, so that later on you can read-write solid TP networks knowing exactly why they are connected in such a way to be enhanced.
About Presets
Our presets are equally impressive in quantity and quality, because they were customized to fit each lesson based on the rules in which TP was designed. Learn how to read the presets in a way that will allow you to customize them while introducing new rules in the network.

Generators Paradise
The most important group of nodes, with out a doubt, are the Generator group. Without them, we have no particles at all! Each one of the generators has its own power and influence. All the information you will ever need will be described here in detail in addition to important xpresso workflows examples.

Setting New Rules
Even though it is important to know what any single node can do, it is indispensable to know how to get them to communicate. As the training progresses, we gradually get knowledge of how to set new rules for the particles by combining XPresso and TP networks.

Force Factory
Thinking Particles is well known for its Dynamic group of nodes. In our lessons we will increase the complexity of the examples incrementally building from the ground up. We feel it is the only way for the viewer to absorb the intensity of its workflow.

Emission Control
By this time you will already know how to work with the generators and dynamic groups. Now its time to start bending the rules a bit and combine nodes together to achieve something interesting and new. As with any other node in TP we can also customize the emission of particles in any way we want. So get ready for some really cool particles!

Particles Control
Drawing cool formations of particles is not a simple task, so we will take the time to scrutinize the scenes. We search for what would be the best network setup, while keeping it simple and efficient.

Groups Heaven
Thinking Particles strong point is definitely the ability to work with particle groups in which certain tasks can be assigned. TP allow the user to create and customize the creation and rules of groups on an infinity way. During each lesson we, will be dealing with this topic so it is sure that all users talk the group language as if it was their own.

Solidifying TP
Another great feature of Thinking Particles is the possibility of working with geometries. There are severals tips and tricks to make them work properly, assuring that they are doing exactly what you want. We will take you trough all of the important aspects of working with particle geometry.

Breaking Up is hard to do
Building networks to break things up will be our focus in this set of lessons. Some of them can be really tricky but do not worry! Once you finish these lessons you will be able to break objects about as much as an angry spouse!

Object Integration
By this time you will feel warm and fuzzy about Thinking Particle networks. Its time to integrate them into the projects and have them affect each other respectively. Our networks are clearly more extensive now, mixing XPresso nodes and TP nodes seamlessly and accurately. Driving the actions of our particles with a current scene animation is something really fun to do!

Now that you have consumed all this knowledge it is time to test it out with a larger scale project. In this course we will use a Maya to ZBrush workflow to build and texture a detailed battle hammer.

When working with digital assets, the ability of your computer to manipulate those assets is limited, especially when dealing with very high resolution meshes. For this reason, we use things like normal maps to simulate the high resolution detail in a way that we can more easily use. In this course, we'll use a weathered battle hammer as an example to illustrate some of the ways you can use Maya and ZBrush together to build and sculpt high resolution props and set pieces and create useable assets. After building the base geometry and laying out UVs in Maya, we'll go through the process of sculpting and texturing the hammer in ZBrush. We'll finish up by applying all of that detail back in Maya to create a high quality, useable prop.

Class 5: Stabilization and more tricks on orienting the 3D world with the footage.
Class 6: Tracking a DV shot and dealing with interlacing, compression artifacts, and an intro to masking.
Class 7: Brief on importing interlaced footage in a 3D app. A difficult handheld shot using manual tracking.
Class 8: Tracking a steadycam shot through the lab. Cleaning up trackers and prepping a shot for use in 3D.
Class 9: Tracking a shot with a lot of lens distortion. Adding distortion to CGI elements for use in compositing applications.
Class 10: Getting started with a very challenging shot. Instead of achieving a perfect track in one class, overall techniques are discussed that are useful when approaching more difficult shots.
